Padova (Padua)
We had a great day in one of the oldest university towns in Europe. Padua University was founded in 1222
AD as a law school making it the 2nd oldest in Europe, after Bologna. The next to follow were Paris, then Cambridge & Oxford in England. We parked by the plaza where there was a big fair setting up but we had to speed-walk to make it to the 11:30 tour, the last of the day. We were the last to buy tickets & didn't have to wait for the tour to start. Good timing. Our guide spoke fairly good English although she was switching back & forth from Italian which made it a little more difficult to follow her commentary.
We learned about the great students & teachers of the 16th & 17th centuries such as Copernicus (heliocentric theory), Galileo (telescopic discoveries) & William Harvey (blood circulation) & their great contributions to the scientific revolution. We visited the general lecture hall which is still used today & only open for certain tours when not being used. No pictures allowed inside any of the rooms but I got a few bootleg pics. The medical school was started later & the famous anatomy theatre was added in 1595, the oldest surviving of its kind.
We spent the next couple of hours at the central plaza visiting the booths of the traveling fair & relaxing on the grass in the sun. The kids got to run around & played some tag. It was a beautiful day & very much worth the trip. Maybe the lack of tourist masses replaced by fair-going locals was a pleasant change. When we got back to our house in Lonigo, our host Gabriele showed up & we visited for about an hour as he told us about his recent trip to the arctic circle, gave us traveling tips & ordered dinner for us from his favorite pizza place...
