Thursday, Feb. 9 (week 3 / day 18) Fortuna & Rio Celeste, CR

Cerro Chato Hike
Today Paul, Sydney & Carley hiked the Cerro Chato trail just southeast of the town of Fortuna. Cerro Chato is a dormant volcano with a green-water lagoon in it's crater. Of course it was too cloudy to see much at all from the top but we had a super fun workout getting there, drenched in sweat. The climb was hard & muddy but we pushed past a dozen groups of trekkers on our way. Going down was a gravitational treat, though our knees wobbled a bit as we neared the end.

It was hard not to get muddy on this narrow portion of the trail

Climbing up more muddy walls

finally at the top, a beautiful feeling & scenery!

going down was A LOT easier!
We showered off the mud, packed the car & drove from Fortuna to our next stop: Rio Celeste.

Rio Celeste
Rio Celeste is a river famous for the color of its water, a clear light blue from its minerals. The locals say that when God finished painting the sky, He dipped his brushes in Rio Celeste. It's really quite beautiful. We chose Cabinas Piuri B&B because it's situated right on the river just outside the nearby park entrance (Tenorio NP). In the park you pay to hike through the jungle to a waterfall feeding the river but are not allowed to get in. At Cabinas Piuri your cabin is a 2 minute walk down the stairs & you have your own private swimming hole!

We used the communal kitchen (we had it all to ourselves) & made a big pot of macaroni & cheese with carrots & cucumbers on the side. We can't wait for the Costa Rican breakfast tomorrow!
