Tuesday, May 9 (week 16 / day 107) Bressanone, Italy

The Dolomites

Lunch in Santa Magdalena
We drove south from Bressanone to hike up toward the mountains we see from our porch. We turned off the main road at Tiso & passed through Villnoss (where Reinhold Messner grew up!) & came to the beautiful valley where the resort town of Santa Magdalena sits. The town is almost deserted this time of year & we asked the 2 people we saw about a restaurant. We found a resort restaurant but it looked closed. It turns out they were open, just completely empty.

Gasthof Edelweiss. The waitress looked like she had just woken up from a nap & it took her a few minutes for her to warm up to us. She informed us that all they had right now was pasta, omelettes, & wiener schnitzel. We got some of each & finished it all! Wiener schnitzel is a flat piece of breaded pork, not the hotdog we seem to think of. In the Midwest this is what they call a "pork tenderloin." We didn't have any room for dessert so we headed on up the valley for our hike.

Day Hike in the Dolomites
I think we only hiked up half the distance we first intended, but we found the perfect mountain pasture with a close up view of the peaks we came to see...

Water Park in Brixen
We went straight from the hike to the local water park  in downtown Bressanone ("Brixen" is the German for "Bressanone"). Our lodging includes the "Brixen Card" which lets us in free to this "Aquarena" which is a couple steps up from the Nampa Rec Center! It has a long water tunnel water slide, a huge fancy hot tub area, access to an outdoor section of the pool & the water is warm...
