Friday, June 2 (week 19 / day 131) Park Day in Paris

Sainte Chapelle
Stacia really wanted to see this cool church but nobody else did. Well, sleeping in just sounded better so we all stayed home while Stacia got up early for an outing all to herself. Sainte Chapelle is the "holy chapel" which King Louis IX built in the 1240s to house his religious relics, including the crown of thorns (not on display & unlikely the original). Stacia also stopped by Notre Dame for a few pics but decided she didn't need to wait in the long line to go up the Quasimodo tower.

Belleville Park
After Stacia got home we walked to the neighborhood park here in Belleville with its cool fort-style playground with port holes, tunnels & slides. The kids had blast running up this cement foundation into the fortress opening. This was just the warm up...

Luxembourg Park
After an hour at Belleville Park, Stacia dragged us downtown to find the large, more famous, Luxembourg Park. The guidebook suggests buying food at nearby shops & bringing it to the park to enjoy the scenery during your picnic. We stopped at the Bon Marche which was quite the whole foods type of store. We ended up spending over $70 for our "picnic" food! After a nice Parisian lady helped us find the park, we found the many chairs on endless gravel paths but nobody was sitting on the grass. Not what we pictured.

The clouds were gathering & just as we were finished eating it starting raining so we found shelter at the kids' playground nearby. Avery, Kyra & Cannon entered the park ($2.50 each) & played in the rain. Stacia left with Sydney & Carley for some shopping while I stayed at the playground... They played for four hours, until the park closed at 7pm! They met some English-speaking kids from India & played different games with them. A great park day for the kids.

The metro ride home was almost a disaster when the first train we got on suddenly closed down due to some problem on the track ahead. I almost called it quits...
